The Bawku Municipal Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has sensitised traders at the Bawku Central market, Identifiable groups, and Basic schools in the Bawku Municipality of the Upper East Region on the COVID-19 Delta Variant.
The sensitization forms part of the Commission’s activities to deepen public awareness of the new COVID-19 strain, preventive measures, and Government efforts in response to the resurgence of the disease. The exercise targeted Sabon Zongo J.H.S, Susu women’s group at Ngorugu and Tanpinzua, women group at Galake and Zabugu, tailors at Gingande, hairdressers at Kariyama, GPRTU operators, and commuters at new lorry station in Bawku.
Assistant Civic Education Officer (ACEO), Mr. Carlven Avaba-ngaang Afelik explained that the COVID-19 Delta strain is more contagious and far deadlier than other variants and encouraged the traders and pupils to adhere to all COVID-19 safety protocols.
The proper wearing of face masks is still mandatory and it is a breach of the law to be out in public without a face mask. The sanctions for non-compliance as captured in Executive Instrument (E.I) 164 under the Imposition of Restrictions Act, 2020 (Act 1012) is a fine of not less than 1,000 penalty units (Gh¢12,000.00) and not more than 5,000 penalty units (GH¢60,000.00) or incarceration between four to ten years or both’, Mr. Afelik reiterated.
Ms. Munira Yussif, a volunteer with the office, added that aside from wearing the face masks in public, traders and pupils should practice physical distancing in public places, wash their hands with soap under running water for 30 seconds, and use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser frequently after touching any objects and surfaces.
The NCCE urges the Ghanaian citizenry as a matter of urgency to take personal responsibility to protect and safeguard themselves and others by adhering to all COVID-19 safety protocols.
