NCCE Adentan Marks World Environment Day at Mercy Islamic JHS

Pupils of Mercy Islamic Junior High School, Lakeside, have been encouraged to become climate champions by protecting the environment, keeping their surroundings clean and promoting responsible waste disposal in their homes and communities.

Adentan Municipal Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), in collaboration with the Environmental Health Department of the Adentan Municipal Assembly (AdMA), commemorated World Environment Day with the pupils under the theme, “Climate Action,” and the slogan, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.”

Held at the school’s assembly hall, the programme brought together pupils, teachers, NCCE officials and officers from the Environmental Health Department to deepen awareness on environmental protection and climate responsibility.

Mrs. Sylvia Osei-Bonsu, Adentan Municipal Director of the NCCE, sensitized the pupils on the importance of climate action and linked the theme to current environmental challenges affecting Ghana. She mentioned rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, floods, droughts, deforestation and plastic pollution as issues that require urgent attention from all citizens.

Referencing Article 41(k) of the 1992 Constitution, Mrs. Osei-Bonsu reminded the pupils that every citizen has a duty to protect and safeguard the environment. She urged them to take practical steps such as keeping their school compound clean, avoiding littering, planting trees and encouraging others to care for the environment.

Madam Esther Ashinyo of the Environmental Health Department of AdMA served as the main resource person. She educated the pupils on environmental pollution, bushfires, improper waste disposal and the causes and effects of flooding. Using practical examples, she explained that protecting wetlands, forests and biodiversity can help reduce the impact of climate change.

Attention was also drawn to the need for regular desilting of drains, proper waste management and the reduction of practices that block waterways and worsen flooding. Pupils were encouraged to see environmental protection as a shared responsibility that begins with simple daily actions.

Learner-centred methods were used throughout the engagement, allowing pupils to ask questions, share experiences and make meaningful contributions. Many of them showed keen interest in the topic and pledged to help keep their school and communities clean.

Mr. Mark Baah Kumi, Senior Civic Education Officer, and Mr. Godwin Danyo, National Service Personnel, supported the discussions, while Mr. Benjamin Bonsrah, a teacher at Mercy Islamic JHS, joined the school leadership in welcoming the initiative.

School authorities commended the NCCE and the Environmental Health Department for the educative interaction and expressed appreciation for bringing climate education to the learners.

Through the programme, Adentan NCCE reaffirmed its commitment to promoting environmental citizenship, climate consciousness and civic responsibility among young people.
