NATIONAL COMMISSION FOR CIVIC EDUCATION- (NCCE) AHAFO REGIONAL OFFICE – GOASO “ANNUAL CONSTITUTION WEEK CELEBRATION”

As part of the Annual Flagship Programme of the National Commission for Civic Education, the Ahafo Regional Office of the Commission on the 12th of May, 2023 commemorated the Annual Constitution Week Celebration engaging the Regional Commander, Deputy Commissioner and officers of the Ahafo Regional Police Service and the Ghana Immigration Service respectively on the theme “30 Years of Consolidating Constitutional Democracy: Building National Cohesion through Civic Education and Participation in Local Government”.

The Regional Office team was led by Mr. Eric Anyormi (Assistant Director). The rest of the team were: Mr. Atta Yeboah Kofi (ACEO), Ms. Ellen Lokko (ACEO) and Ms. Dora Etevor (ACEO).

Mr. Anyormi the main speaker of the event highlighted on reasons why NCCE commemorates 28 April to 4th May as Constitution week Celebration. He said the celebration reminds us of our return to democratic constitutional rule.

He mentioned that before Ghana was ushered into democratic governance, it had already experimented three pervious unsuccessful republican constitutions from 1960-1966; 1969 -1972; and 1979-1981, making the 1992 Constitution the longest-lived Republican Constitution.

Mr. Eric Anyormi expounded on some of the roles the security services can play in ensuring national cohesion. He stated that responding to crisis in a timely manner can avert a lot of adverse effects when there is a system for community intelligence monitoring. He further added that, security services could also collaborate with institutions like NCCE to create security awareness among the citizenry to be each other’s keeper.

The officers were appreciative of the commission selecting their outfits for engagements to mark the celebration with them.

An officer from the Ghana Police Service, Corporal Mohammed commended the work of NCCE in Ahafo Region and encouraged the commission to augment their engagements with their citizenry so that they can refrain from election violence, embrace national cohesion and thus promote and sustain our democracy.

ASI Kingsford Owusu, an officer from the Ghana Immigration Service expressed the view that government and parliament should access and review recommendations from the NCCE annual reports aimed at realizing the objectives of the Constitution.

As part of the engagement, the officers from both security agencies also called for the implementation and enforcement of the reforms advocated and documented in 2010 by the Constitution Review Commission, and suggested that the reforms should be time bound to allow for future reviews.

The Agencies also called for more resource support to the Commission to enable it contribute their quota effectively and thus shape mindset for National Cohesion and Development.
