Choosing a healthy lifestyle and surrounding oneself with positive influences can help young people avoid the dangers of drug and substance abuse. This was the central message delivered to listeners of Nandom FM 101.9 MHz during public education engagements by the Nandom Municipal Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE).
The radio discussions formed part of the Directorate’s continuing efforts to educate residents about the consequences of harmful drug use and encourage families to protect young people from substance abuse.
Speaking during the programmes, the Nandom Municipal Director of NCCE, Mr. Issahaque T. Angme, explained that drug and substance abuse can have serious implications for individuals, families and communities. He drew attention to the wider social consequences of harmful drug use, stressing that the problem requires the involvement of the public rather than being left to affected individuals alone.
Mr. Angme appealed to parents, guardians and other family members to take an active interest in the wellbeing of relatives who may be using harmful substances. He encouraged them to offer guidance and urge those involved to stop, underscoring the value of family support in discouraging substance abuse.
His message also focused on prevention. He advised listeners, especially young people, to adopt healthy habits and be mindful of the company they keep. Positive friendships and responsible lifestyle choices, he noted, can help young people avoid situations that expose them to harmful substances.
The Director further urged members of the public to consider the long-term effects of their choices and prioritise activities that support their wellbeing and future aspirations. His appeal placed responsibility not only on young people but also on the households and communities that shape their everyday experiences.
By taking the message to radio audiences, the Municipal Office sought to reach residents beyond formal community meetings and promote reflection on the dangers of substance abuse. The engagements reinforced the need for continued public education and shared responsibility in protecting young people from harmful drugs.
The message to listeners was clear: prevention begins with informed choices, supportive relationships, and a collective commitment to healthier communities.
