Students of Dasabligo Junior High School in the Nabdam District have been urged to embrace discipline, patriotism, and responsible behaviour as key ingredients for personal success and national development during the 2026 Citizenship Week Celebration.
The civic engagement, organized by the Nabdam District Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) on 5th June 2026, formed part of the nationwide Citizenship Week campaign aimed at nurturing civic-minded and responsible young citizens. The programme brought together officials from the NCCE and the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to educate students on their rights, responsibilities, and roles in nation-building.
Addressing the students, the Nabdam District Director of the NCCE emphasized the importance of good moral values, patriotism, discipline, and a commitment to excellence. The students were taken through Article 41 of the 1992 Constitution, which outlines the duties and responsibilities of citizens, and were encouraged to understand and perform their civic obligations as responsible members of society.
The learners were advised to concentrate on their studies, respect authority, avoid negative peer influence, and protect public property. They were further encouraged to become agents of positive change within their communities and to uphold truth, honesty, and integrity in all their dealings.
Particular attention was given to the growing involvement of young people in illegal mining activities. The students were cautioned against visiting galamsey sites after school and were educated on the harmful consequences of illegal mining on education, health, the environment, and future opportunities.
The facilitators explained that while galamsey may appear attractive due to short-term financial gains, it often deprives young people of quality education and exposes them to numerous social and economic challenges. Students were therefore encouraged to remain focused on their education and pursue legitimate pathways to success.
Contributing to the discussion, Ms. Patricia Ayichuru, Nabdam District Director of CHRAJ, advised the students to be respectful, responsible, and mindful of their communication both in school and within their communities. She encouraged them to view themselves as future leaders and to cultivate positive attitudes towards their parents, teachers, and peers.
Ms. Ayichuru also educated the learners on the significance of the 1992 Constitution as the supreme law of Ghana, stressing that respect for constitutional principles is essential for maintaining peace, justice, and democratic governance.
Mr. Elbazar Joachim further motivated the students to aspire to leadership and positions of responsibility in the future. He encouraged them to develop strong reading habits, complete their assignments on time, and remain obedient to parents and teachers. He also emphasized the importance of ethics and morality in shaping responsible and productive citizens.
Given the challenges facing Dasabligo as a community affected by illegal mining activities, the engagement placed considerable emphasis on protecting the future of young people through education and positive behaviour. Students were reminded that education remains one of the most effective tools for breaking the cycle of poverty and achieving long-term success.
The Headmaster of Dasabligo Junior High School, Mr. Akare Elvis, expressed appreciation to the NCCE and CHRAJ for the timely engagement. He noted that the programme had provided valuable guidance to the students and reinforced positive values that would contribute to their personal development and academic success.
Mr. Elvis further appealed to the institutions to continue involving the school in future educational programmes, describing Dasabligo as a deprived community that would greatly benefit from sustained civic and moral education initiatives.
The students actively participated in the engagement by asking questions and sharing their views on issues discussed. At the end of the programme, they pledged to uphold discipline, patriotism, honesty, and good moral values in their daily lives.
The successful celebration highlighted the importance of continuous civic education in addressing indiscipline and empowering young people with the knowledge needed to become responsible citizens. It also reinforced the message that educating the youth on their rights and responsibilities is a shared responsibility that requires the support of parents, teachers, community leaders, and public institutions.
