The National Commission for Civic Education has interacted with Founder and leader of the Liberal Party of Ghana, Mr. Kofi Akpaloo as part of its 2024 Consultative Visits to political parties. The meeting took place at the party's Head Office in Accra.
The NCCE's meeting with political parties give the NCCE the opportunity to outline its civic engagements and programmes ahead of the 2024 general election; discuss how political parties can play active roles and participate meaningfully in its civic programmes. The Commission also receives feedback and inputs from political parties going into the elections.
Chairperson of NCCE, Ms. Kathleen Addy highlighted some civic programmes that political parties can take advantage of and participate. Some of the programmes are the NCCE’s Parliamentary and Presidential Canadidates’ debates, the Inter-Party Dialogue Committees, youth centred programmes and other activities that ensure inclusivity.
Ms. Addy called on political parties to get involved in NCCE’s programmes to promote a participatory democracy.
Ms. Kathleen Addy emphasised that in a multi-party democratic nation such as Ghana, political parties are essential pillars of development, a strategic partner and serve as engines for promoting an entrenched civic culture among citizens adding that the visit to the party is crucial to the work of the NCCE.
‘We have intensified youth engagements, especially with political youth activists, to promote peace and stability before, during and after the elections.”
Deputy Chairman in charge of Operations, Mr. Samuel Asare Akuamoah took the LPG through the mandate and operations of the Commission, its human resource capacity, successes chalked up and its determination to intensify civic education nationwide.
Mr. Kofi Akpaloo of LPG raised some issues of national concern and charged the NCCE to step in and change certain narratives in our country.
