Gomoa West NCCE / GII swears in Social Auditing Committee

The Gomoa West District Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), in collaboration with Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), has embarked on a project dubbed, “Inclusive Services Delivery Africa” (ISDA). This project aims at improving access to education and healthcare services for women, girls and other groups at risk of discrimination in Africa by addressing corruption-related barriers. The program took place at the District Assembly Hall.

In her opening address, the Gomoa West District Director of the NCCE, Ms. Edith Ivy Howard cited the longevity of corruption in Ghana and bemoaned its effect on the society and on the nation’s economy. She was optimistic Ghana would win the fight against corruption if society becomes aware of its negative consequences. She charged all stakeholders to get involved in Social Auditing activities which would promote community ownership of developmental projects, and policies, and empower the citizenry to demand accountability from the duty bearers. She also pledged the support of NCCE in the fight against corruption.

At the program, a Social Auditing Committee was formed, with elected executives and was duly sworn into office by the NCCE District Director. She charged them to work assiduously for the elimination of inequalities, seek accountability from duty-bearers and ultimately reduce corruption to its barest minimum in the district.

Mr. Michael Boadi, the Fund-Raising Manager for GII reiterated the damaging consequences of corruption to the nation as a whole. He further cited the Ghana 2019 Pre-tertiary sub-sector of the Auditor General’s Report to Parliament, which captured corruption in the education sector and revealed irregularities at the pre-tertiary level.

Mr. Robert Kow Ewur, Head of Internal Audit at the NCCE also emphasized the need for citizen participation through Social Auditing for good governance. He urged all to be good citizens and contribute positively to the fight against corruption.

Key stakeholders for executing the Project included the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Ghana Education Service (GES), Ghana Police Service, Internal Audit Agency (IAA), Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP) and Gomoa West District Assembly among others.
