The National Commission for Civic Education, NCCE, has been honoured by the Ghana Integrity Initiative for promoting transparency and social accountability through its Civic Education programmes and championing the fight against corruption. At a special awards ceremony organised in Accra, the Commission was recognised for using one of its flagship programmes, Social Auditing to highlight the need for transparency and accountability in local governance.
The NCCE's Social Auditing programme seeks to promote discourse among citizens and duty bearers on planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of development projects and programmes at the district level. Social Auditing, since 2006 has provided a platform for citizens to influence policymaking, promotes community ownership of development projects and empower the citizenry to demand accountability from duty bearers.
Under the NCCE's Social Auditing programme, many community projects have been completed across the country. Some of the projects include the construction of schools, boreholes, CHIPs compounds, markets, culverts, KVIPs, among others.
Ghana Integrity Initiative presented a desktop computer, a citation and a plaque to the Commission. Citation to the Commission, read, “The NCCE’s Social Auditing Project empowered the citizenry to be active participants in the national governance processes. Through the project, NCCE intensified the education of community leaders on social auditing, hence, increased the capacity of citizens to demand accountability from the government. NCCE’s contribution to citizens’ ability to examine processes and results of planned and budgeted activities in their localities stands out and has strengthened the demand side of accountability. We applaud and celebrate the Management and staff of the NCCE.”
Present at the ceremony were Chairperson of NCCE, Ms Josephine Nkrumah, Deputy Chairperson, Finance and Administration, Ms Kathy Addy, Commission Secretary, Mr Tito Voegborlo and some Directors of the Commission.
