NCCE’s District Director at Tolon in the Northern Region, Ms. Hawawu Abdul-Rahaman, has engaged selected youth in the community on the effects of drug abuse. The interaction occurred at the Gbewaa Palace where the NCCE District Director urged the youth to avoid substance abuse. They include cocaine, heroin, Indian hemp popularly known as wee, cigarettes, and psycho-active drugs, among others. The District Director and her team disclosed to the group the underlying health implications associated with substance abuse.
Members of the group justified the use of the substance explaining that the substance serves as an immune and appetite booster and helps to calm their nerves, taking their minds off their current state of joblessness, financial challenges, and family neglect.
Ms. Abdul-Rahaman further advised the youth to desist from taking these drugs since it could impede their mental health, affect their lungs and respiratory system and push them into strange and unlawful acts. She encouraged them to desist from such practices to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
The youth pleaded with the government to create jobs for youth to prevent them from drug abuse and to build a better future for themselves. They tasked the right authorities to monitor the circulation of drugs in the system since many bought their drugs in open markets and nightclubs.
