British High Commission and NCCE hold talks ahead 2024 General Election

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and a British High Commission delegation have discussed NCCE’s preparedness for the 2024 General Election. The meeting took place at the NCCE's Head Office in Accra. The meeting discussed, among others, Civic Education moves for the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections, the state of affairs and other activities in the lead-up to the December 7 polls.

The Deputy Chairman in Charge of Operations, Mr. Samuel Asare Akuamoah, welcomed the team and highlighted the Commission’s mandate, functions and operational areas. He also chronicled some ongoing voter education programmes which he described as citizen-centred and seek to promote a participatory democracy.

Mr. Samuel Asare Akuamaoh, stressed the importance of an improved partnership between the NCCE and the Electoral Commission of Ghana to amplify voter education. This Mr. Akuamoah believes will help reduce rejected ballots, voter apathy and general challenges in national elections.

He, however, said the NCCE has intensified voter education across the country, focusing on citizens, especially eligible voters for the upcoming elections. He gave the assurance that the NCCE will actively engage eligible voters during the entire election season to promote civic participation.

Mr. Akuamoah later lamented the funding challenges faced by the NCCE. He decried how this development impedes civic education programmes.

The Head of the Political and Governance Section, Ms. Aneesah Islam, the Governance Advisor, Ms. Clara Osei-Boateng, and the First Secretary-Election, Mr. Dominic Howell, represented the British High Commissioner at the meeting.

The team lead, Ms. Aneesah Islam asked about NCCE’s plans towards the upcoming December elections. In response, the Director of Programmes, Dr. Imrana Mohammed, outlined major civic education engagements for the 2024 election. He mentioned among others; consultative visits to registered political parties, dialogues with relevant stakeholders and prominent figures, engagements with youth and identifiable groups, collaborations with development partners, Civil Society Organisations and Faith-Based Organisations on peaceful elections; media outreaches and discussions with strong emphasis on four thematic areas, Misinformation, electoral violence, religious tolerance and money in politics.
