Accra, April 29, GNA – The National Youth Committee of the Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU) on Tuesday donated Personal Protective Equipment to the Greater Accra Regional Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE).
The PPE include 50 pieces of liquid soap, eight boxes of hand sanitizer, 150 pieces of face masks and paper tissue to support the Commission’s Anti COVID-19 Public Education Campaign.
Mr Bernard Adjei, the PSWU General Secretary, said the Greater Accra Regional Directorate was chosen because of the high number of cases recorded in the Region, which put the staff at a higher risk of infection compared to the other regions.
He said the items were to be given to staff to enable them to protect themselves adequately during their educational activities.
Mr Adjei noted that the PSWU would donate to the COVID-19 Trust Fund through the Trades Union Congress, adding; “We pray that the NCCE will be one of the institutions to benefit from the Fund”.
Mrs. Lucille Hewlett-Annan, the NCCE Greater Accra Regional Director, who received the items, said the Commission was constrained in terms of logistics and financial resources in spite of the critical role it played in public education.
“We, therefore, consider such support as divine empowerment, acknowledgment of our role and encouragement to work hard in the face of the daunting challenges,” she said.
Mrs Hewlett-Annan reiterated the need to intensify public education on the protocols as specified by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Ghana Health Service (GHS).
She encouraged Ghanaians, especially residents in the Greater Accra Region, to adhere to the compulsory wearing of the right nose masks.
“It is now classified as an offence not to wear face masks in public places, we need to collectively and individually protect each other.”
Mrs Hewlett-Annan appealed to religious and traditional leaders, opinion leaders, heads of families, and other persons in position of influence to use their offices to help curb the spread of COVID-19.
She commended the National Youth Committee for the kind gesture and promised to share the items equitably amongst the 30 offices in the Region.
The Commission had launched the “NCCE Anti-COVID-19 Public Education Campaign” to educate Ghanaians on the pandemic.
The campaign focuses on symptoms, mode of transmission and the need to observe safety protocols outlined by the WHO and GHS.
The NCCE is undertaking the campaign in collaboration with the Church of Pentecost, which has provided mobile cinema van for the activity.
