NCCE UNVEILS OMABAPA SERIES, CIVIC EDUCATION TV AND RADIO PROGRAMME

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), in collaboration with In-genius Africa, has launched a TV and Radio series called “Omanbapa”: the Good Citizen. The commission is mandated as part of its function as stated in the NCCE Act 1993, Act (452), “to formulate, implement and oversee programmes intended to inculcate in the citizens of Ghana awareness of their civic responsibilities and an appreciation of their rights and obligations as free people”. To achieve this, the NCCE will use the TV series as a medium to intensify its conscientization of the citizenry on their civic responsibilities, with the view to engendering civic-minded citizenry for nation-building.

The storyline touches on issues of relevance to Ghana such as corruption, environmental degradation, patriotism, and good neighborliness. The story is set in modern Ghana and revolves around the lives of an upright Ghanaian citizen Mr. Kwame Brimpong, an assemblyman and teaching volunteer; his wife Isabella, a successful entrepreneur; their young daughter Yaa, who is passionate about the environment,

Mike Tyson, a connection man; and a host of other interesting characters. Through these characters, NCCE wishes to spark up a sober national discussion about “individual citizens, our societies and the kind of future we envisage for our country as a whole”.

Addressing the audience at the launch, Deputy Chairperson at the NCCE in charge of Finance and Administration, Ms. Kathleen Addy said, as people, we must tell our own stories with the aim of shaping patriotic citizens who will work to build the country we desire. She stressed that to do this, Ghanaians have to be proactive in utilizing its liberal media dispensation for shaping narratives to build the mindset that will influence development. The production has been made possible with support from the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), Egbert Faible Jnr. of the Petroleum Commission, Hassan Tampuli of National Petroleum Authority (NPA) and Hon. Nii Adjei Sowah, the mayor of Accra.

The series will be showing on kente TV on YouTube and other traditional media including GTV, Joy Prime, GHONE, among others. It will also be translated into different local languages for airing on TV and Radio. Featuring in the series are Adjetey Anang, Mikki Osei Berko, Bibi Bright, Fiifi Coleman, Ahuofe Patri among others.
