The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has joined the commemorative Green Ghana initiative, and entreated every Ghanaian to take active interest in the nationwide tree planting exercise.
Ms. Josephine Nkrumah, Chairperson of NCCE, who planted palm tree seedlings in front of the NCCE Head Office as part of the exercise stressed the importance of the event and the need for everywell-meaning Ghanaian to support the move. “For every human being, we have an earthly responsibility to plant trees and protect our natural environment” she stated. As custodian of the earth, Ms. Nkrumah stressed the need for every one to take climate action seriously to stem the tide of climate change in the world. “Today the world is at a crisis point. Climate change demands climate action from each and every one of us” she stressed. She said Ghanaians as part of the global citizen, have a role to play by embracing the tree planting exercise in their surroundings.
While commending the Ministry of Land and Natural Resources and the Forestry Commission for the initiative, she added that NCCE as part of its environmental governance project supports the programme fully. The essence of planting this palm tree here is to show that this really is life. For every tree we plant, we are saving our environment and saving lives and saving the planet” she added. She noted that trees are valuable in that it gives us food, shade and also absorbs carbon dioxide while giving human beings oxygen.
The Chairperson urged the citizenry to go for the tree seedlings from the designated centres to plant.
