Students of Markazia Junior High School in Daboya were urged to become responsible citizens and stay away from substance abuse during an educational sensitization programme organized by Better Dream Foundation Ghana in collaboration with the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), North Gonja District Office.
The programme, which was held at the premises of Markazia JHS in Daboya, brought together students, teachers, and facilitators to discuss issues relating to human rights, responsibilities, and drug abuse. The initiative formed part of efforts to equip young people with the knowledge and values needed to make informed decisions and contribute positively to society.
Representing the NCCE at the event were the North Gonja District Director, Mr. Duut Mathew Saibu, and the Programme Officer, Mr. Buhari Hafiz. Through interactive presentations and discussions, the officers engaged students on key civic and social issues affecting young people.
Speaking on the topic “Human Rights and Responsibilities,” Mr. Duut Mathew Saibu explained that every individual is entitled to certain fundamental rights as guaranteed by the Constitution of Ghana. He noted that rights such as the right to education, freedom of expression, and protection from discrimination must be respected and protected at all times.
However, he emphasized that the enjoyment of rights comes with corresponding responsibilities. According to him, students must demonstrate discipline, respect for authority, and consideration for the rights of others in order to promote peaceful coexistence. Furthermore, he encouraged them to uphold good moral values and actively contribute to the development of their communities.
In a related presentation, Mr. Buhari Hafiz educated participants on the growing menace of drug abuse and its consequences on the lives of young people. He explained how the misuse of drugs and other harmful substances can negatively affect physical and mental health, academic performance, relationships, and future career opportunities.
Additionally, he cautioned students against yielding to peer pressure, which often serves as a major factor influencing drug use among adolescents. He therefore encouraged them to make responsible choices, associate with positive-minded peers, and seek guidance from parents, teachers, and other trusted adults whenever confronted with difficult situations.
As the programme progressed, students actively participated in discussions by asking questions and sharing their views on the topics presented. This interactive engagement not only enhanced their understanding of the issues but also created an opportunity for meaningful dialogue between the facilitators and participants.
The sensitization programme was well attended and successfully achieved its objective of raising awareness on human rights, civic responsibilities, and the dangers associated with drug abuse. More importantly, it empowered students with practical knowledge to make informed decisions and become responsible members of society.
The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), North Gonja District Office, expresses its sincere appreciation to Better Dream Foundation Ghana for the invitation and for its commitment to promoting civic consciousness and positive behavioral change among the youth. The Commission remains dedicated to partnering with stakeholders to educate citizens and strengthen democratic values at all levels.
