NCCE Yendi Municipal Office Educates Pupils on Human Rights, Drug Abuse and Online Safety

The Yendi Municipal Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has engaged pupils of Yendi Jubilee Primary and Junior High School on human rights, drug abuse, cyberbullying and online abuse. The engagement, held at Jubilee Junior High School, formed part of the Commission’s civic education activities aimed at equipping young people with knowledge of their rights and responsibilities, while raising awareness of the risks associated with harmful behaviour and the misuse of digital platforms.

Addressing the pupils, the Yendi Municipal Director of the NCCE, Mr. Kassim Osman, encouraged them to understand, respect and protect their fundamental human rights while recognising the rights of others. He explained that the enjoyment of rights comes with responsibilities and urged the pupils to respect their parents, teachers, school authorities and colleagues. He further advised them to seek appropriate assistance whenever their rights are violated rather than resorting to violence or unlawful conduct.

Speaking on drug abuse, Mr. Osman cautioned the pupils against experimenting with or using illicit drugs, noting that substance abuse could have serious consequences for their health, education, relationships and future prospects. He encouraged them to resist peer pressure and make responsible choices that would safeguard their wellbeing and development.

Mr. Osman also educated the pupils on cyberbullying and online abuse, drawing attention to the dangers associated with the irresponsible use of social media and other digital platforms. He urged them to protect their personal information, avoid sharing harmful, insulting, or private content about others, and report cyberbullying, online harassment, and other forms of abuse to trusted adults, school authorities or the appropriate institutions. The interactive engagement also provided an opportunity for the pupils to ask questions and share their experiences and concerns.
