The Tempane District Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education has organised a public sensitisation programme on substance abuse for members of various susu groups at Kpinkpanyoung in the Upper East Region.
The engagement, held on 30th May 2026 at the Kpinkpanyoung Mini Market Square, brought together members of the Moyom, Kpakura, Tintaanlieb, and Songtaba Susu Groups to discuss the growing menace of drug abuse and its impact on individuals and communities.
Addressing participants, the District Officer in Charge of Programmes, Mr Pasiba Williams, expressed concern over the rising incidence of substance abuse among young people. He urged participants to seek medical attention from qualified health professionals when ill and avoid the misuse of drugs and self-medication.
Also speaking at the programme, Headteacher of Ninsum Junior High School, Mr Patrick Laar cautioned parents to closely monitor their children and protect them from negative peer influences that could lead to drug abuse.
Participants were educated on the causes of substance abuse, including peer pressure, curiosity, stress, unemployment, and inadequate parental supervision. They were also taken through the physical, psychological, and social consequences of drug abuse and encouraged to serve as advocates against the practice within their communities.
The programme forms part of NCCE’s efforts to promote responsible behaviour and support the development of healthy and productive communities.
