The Upper East Regional Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has sensitized students of Watania Islamic Junior High School in Bolgatanga as part of activities marking the 2026 Citizenship Week Celebration.
The program, held under the national theme, “Upholding Our Constitution in the Digital Age: Our Collective Responsibility,” brought together students, teachers, and NCCE officials for an educational session aimed at promoting responsible digital citizenship among young people.
The engagement focused on the sub-theme, “Growing Up Digital: The Ghanaian Child Upholding the Constitution Online,” which highlighted the importance of protecting constitutional values in an increasingly digital world. The session resonated strongly with the students, many of whom actively use social media platforms and digital devices.
Addressing participants, Ms. Evelyn Ameseya, Civic Education Officer at the Bolgatanga Regional Office, emphasised that the 1992 Constitution of Ghana remains the supreme law of the land and applies equally in digital spaces. She explained that constitutional rights such as freedom of expression, the right to privacy, and the right to information come with corresponding responsibilities when exercised online.
She urged students to be cautious about the content they share on digital platforms and to avoid engaging in online scams and other fraudulent activities that could negatively affect their future prospects.
The students were also taken through key constitutional provisions relevant to their digital lives, including safeguards against cyberbullying, the dangers associated with misinformation and hate speech, and the legal implications of online misconduct under the Cybersecurity Act, 2020 (Act 1038).
Ms. Ameseya encouraged the students to serve as ambassadors of constitutional values in their homes, schools, communities, and online networks. She further charged them to become environmental stewards by protecting and preserving the environment, in line with the principles enshrined in the 1992 Constitution.
The program formed part of the NCCE’s ongoing efforts to promote civic responsibility and constitutional awareness among young people, particularly in the context of the rapidly evolving digital landscape.
