NCCE Sensitizes New LEAP Beneficiaries on Child Trafficking

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has sensitized new beneficiaries of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) program on the dangers of child trafficking.

The sensitization formed part of activities undertaken during the registration of new LEAP beneficiaries organized by the Department of Community Development and Social Welfare.

Communities including Wellembelle, Wuru, Santijan and Bugubelle benefited from the education program.

Assistant Civic Education Officer Madam Narimua Yakubu Alijata took participants through the causes of child trafficking, methods used by traffickers to recruit children, and the effects of the practice on victims, families and society.

Madam Alijata cautioned parents and guardians against allowing poverty and financial difficulties to make them vulnerable to child traffickers.

She urged them to protect their children and be cautious about people who offer opportunities that could expose their children to exploitation.

Madam Alijata described child trafficking as a form of modern-day slavery, stressing that it undermines the rights, dignity and future of children.

She noted that Ghanaian ancestors fought against slavery in the past and questioned why such practices should continue in modern times in the form of child trafficking.

She therefore called on parents, guardians and community members to remain vigilant and work together to protect children from trafficking and other forms of exploitation.
