For children, making the right choices often begins with knowing what can put their health and future at risk. With this in mind, the North Tongu District Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) sensitized pupils of Mepe D/A Basic School and Mepe R.C. Basic School on drug abuse and its effects on individuals and society.
The sensitization programme formed part of the Commission’s civic education mandate to equip young people with knowledge and skills to make responsible decisions.
Speaking at the programme, Ms. Christiana Gasor and Ms. Diana Doamekpor, ACEO, educated the pupils on what drug abuse entails and its effects on the human body. They highlighted the dangers of substance abuse to physical and mental health, cognitive development, and society as a whole.
The pupils were cautioned against the use of substances such as alcohol, opioids, inhalants, and other harmful drugs, which can negatively affect vital organs including the liver, kidneys, and brain, particularly when prolonged use leads to addiction.
The resource persons further advised the pupils to avoid pubs, drinking spots and other environments where they could be exposed to harmful drugs and substances.
They also encouraged the pupils to become ambassadors of the message by sharing what they had learnt with their parents, siblings, friends and peers in their communities. This, they noted, would help create greater awareness and contribute to efforts to curb drug abuse among young people.
The engagement provided the pupils with practical knowledge on the consequences of drug abuse and reinforced the importance of making healthy and responsible choices for their wellbeing and future.
