As part of the 2026 Citizenship Week Celebration, the Kwaebibirem Municipal Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) undertook an educational outreach program at Islamic JHS and Presbyterian JHS at Nkwatanang. The engagement was conducted under the theme “Growing Up Digital: The Ghanaian Child Upholding the Constitution Online.”
The program was facilitated by Mr. Opare Edward, Assistant Civic Education Officer (ACEO), and Mr. Annobel Godfred, Civic Field Officer (CFO), who interacted with pupils on the responsible use of digital technologies and the importance of upholding constitutional values in the online space.
In his presentation, Mr. Opare Edward explained that growing up digital refers to the increasing use of technological devices such as mobile phones, computers, tablets, and the internet by children for learning, communication, and entertainment. He noted that technology has become an essential tool that offers numerous opportunities for education, innovation, and personal development.
Mr. Opare further highlighted that despite the benefits of digital technology, some individuals misuse online platforms for unlawful and harmful activities. He cited internet fraud, cyberbullying, impersonation, the spread of false information, and online harassment as examples of negative behaviors that undermine societal values and violate Ghanaian laws.
He therefore encouraged the pupils to use digital platforms responsibly and ethically by avoiding fraudulent activities, misinformation, and abusive conduct online. He also educated them on the legal implications of cyber-related offences, stressing that offenders may face arrest, prosecution, and punishment under the laws of Ghana.
The pupils actively participated in the engagement by asking questions and sharing their views on responsible online behavior. The interactive session enhanced their understanding of digital citizenship and the need to respect the rights and dignity of others while using the internet.
The program ended successfully with words of encouragement from the NCCE officials, who urged the students to become responsible digital citizens and uphold the values and principles enshrined in the Constitution of Ghana both online and offline.
