NCCE East Gonja Engages Pentecost Church Congregants on Responsible Digital Citizenship

The East Gonja Municipal Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education has engaged members of the Pentecost Church at Adamupe on responsible use of digital platforms as part of activities marking the 2026 Constitution Week Celebration.

The programme was held on Sunday, 31st May 2026, at the Pentecost Church, Adamupe. It sought to promote constitutional awareness, responsible citizenship, and digital responsibility among citizens, in line with the theme, “Upholding Our Constitution in a Digital Age: Our Collective Responsibility.”

The educational session was facilitated by Mr. Mumuni Muzamilo and Madam Dawuda Zuleya, who sensitised the congregation on the need to uphold constitutional values both online and offline. Participants were reminded that the digital space has become an important platform for communication, learning, business, civic participation, and social interaction, but must be used responsibly.

In his presentation, Mr. Muzamilo explained that the 1992 Constitution guarantees fundamental rights such as freedom of expression and access to information. He, however, noted that these rights must be exercised with responsibility, respect for the rights of others, and commitment to public peace.

He cautioned congregants against the spread of misinformation and disinformation, stressing that false information can create fear, confusion, mistrust, and division within society. He encouraged participants to verify information from credible sources before sharing it on social media or other digital platforms.

Mr. Muzamilo also educated the congregation on cybercrime-related issues, including online fraud, identity theft, phishing, impersonation, and cyberbullying. He advised participants to safeguard their personal information, avoid suspicious links, and report suspicious online activities to the appropriate authorities.

Madam Dawuda Zuleya, on her part, emphasised the need for responsible digital citizenship. She urged participants to promote peace, tolerance, truthfulness, and respect for the rights and dignity of others in their online interactions.

She discouraged the use of social media for hate speech, online abuse, insults, and other harmful activities that undermine social cohesion and peaceful coexistence. According to her, responsible online behaviour is an important part of good citizenship and contributes to the protection of Ghana’s democratic values.

Parents and guardians were also encouraged to monitor and guide the online activities of their children. The facilitators noted that children may be exposed to digital threats, harmful content, exploitation, and unsafe online interactions if they are not properly guided.

The session allowed participants to ask questions and share experiences on cybersecurity, online privacy, social media use, and responsible digital conduct.

The programme ended with a call on citizens to uphold the values of the Constitution by demonstrating responsibility, truthfulness, accountability, and respect in their use of digital platforms.
