NCCE Deputy Chairman Calls for Dedicated Funding for Civic Education

Sustaining civic education and preparing Ghana’s next generation for responsible citizenship will require a dedicated source of funding for the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), the Commission’s Deputy Chairman of Operations, Mr Samuel Asare Akuamoah, has said.

Speaking during the closing remarks at the NCCE Press Soirée 2026, held at the Accra City Hotel on Thursday, 27 August 2026, under the theme, “Strengthening Civic Education through Strategic Partnerships,” Mr Akuamoah called for adequate resourcing of the Commission to enable it to effectively discharge its constitutional mandate across the country.

According to Mr Akuamoah, the broad responsibilities entrusted to the NCCE require a sustainable and predictable funding arrangement. He stressed that the Commission must be properly equipped to consistently reach citizens with civic education and promote greater understanding of their rights, responsibilities and obligations to the state, particularly at a time when continuous civic education remains critical to democratic governance, responsible citizenship and national cohesion.

The Deputy Chairman placed particular emphasis on the need to continuously educate young people, noting that they are the future leaders of the country. He stressed that preparing them for responsible citizenship and leadership requires sustained civic education that equips them with the knowledge, values and sense of responsibility needed to contribute meaningfully to national development. He further observed that the NCCE’s work extends across the country, with engagements at the national, regional, district and community levels, making its nationwide presence essential to reaching citizens and responding to emerging civic and democratic challenges.

Mr Akuamoah also highlighted the importance of strong partnerships in advancing the work of the Commission. He acknowledged the significant role of the media in extending the reach of civic education and helping citizens access credible information on issues of national importance. He therefore encouraged media organisations, development partners and other stakeholders to deepen their collaboration with the NCCE, stressing that civic education must be continuous and should not receive attention only during elections or periods of heightened political activity.

He expressed appreciation to the media and other stakeholders for their continued support for the Commission and reaffirmed the NCCE’s commitment to working with its partners to strengthen civic awareness, responsible citizenship and democratic participation across the country.
