NCCE Chairperson Visits Cape Coast, Receives 100 Copies of 1992 Constitution

The Chairperson of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Ms. Kathleen Addy, has paid a special visit to Cape Coast to receive, on behalf of the Cape Coast Metropolitan Directorate of the Commission, a donation of 100 copies of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana. The donation, presented by the Office of the Registrar of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), is expected to support the Directorate’s civic education activities in schools, organisations and communities across the Cape Coast Metropolis. The gesture will further enhance efforts by the Commission to promote constitutional awareness and deepen citizens’ understanding of their rights, responsibilities and obligations.

As part of the visit, the Cape Coast Metropolitan Director of the NCCE, Mr. Joseph Abban, accompanied Ms. Addy and her team to pay a courtesy call on the Mayor of Cape Coast, Hon. George Justice Arthur. The engagement provided an opportunity for the leadership of the NCCE and the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly (CCMA) to discuss their existing collaboration and explore areas in which the two institutions could work more closely to advance civic education and public sensitisation within the metropolis.

Welcoming the delegation, Hon. George Justice Arthur expressed delight at meeting the NCCE Chairperson and acknowledged the cordial and longstanding working relationship between the Assembly and the Commission. He commended the Cape Coast Metropolitan Directorate of the NCCE for its contribution to public education and the effective dissemination of information to residents. According to him, the Directorate has remained an important partner of the Assembly in mobilising and sensitising citizens on programmes and initiatives aimed at improving conditions within the metropolis.

The Mayor particularly highlighted the extensive public education undertaken by the NCCE ahead of the sanitation and clean-up exercise organised by the Assembly. He noted that the Commission’s sensitisation activities contributed significantly to increasing public awareness and encouraging residents to participate in the exercise. He therefore expressed appreciation for the support of the NCCE and stressed the importance of sustaining the partnership to promote greater public participation in programmes undertaken by the Assembly.

Responding, Ms. Kathleen Addy acknowledged the support extended by the Mayor and the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly to the NCCE Metropolitan Directorate and commended the strong relationship between the two institutions. She observed that the existing partnership could be further strengthened to address critical social issues affecting communities, particularly drug abuse, teenage pregnancy and child protection. She emphasised that sustained civic education and public sensitisation are essential to changing attitudes, encouraging responsible behaviour and promoting the wellbeing of citizens, especially young people.

Ms. Addy further advocated increased institutional collaboration and adequate resourcing of the NCCE to enable the Commission to expand its public education programmes and reach more citizens. She noted that with the necessary support, the Commission could intensify interventions aimed at addressing negative social attitudes and behaviours while promoting responsible citizenship and community participation. The visit, together with the donation of copies of the 1992 Constitution, reinforced the importance of collaboration among public institutions in advancing constitutional awareness, civic responsibility and national development.
