NCCE’s Deputy Chairman in charge of Operations, Samuel Asare Akuamoah, has appealed to eligible voters to develop a keen interest in the 2019 District Level Elections since it formed the base structure of the local government system in Ghana. This, he said would help deepen the country’s local government system and also consolidate the country’s democratic gains. Mr. Akuamoah made these statements at a sensitisation programme on the 2019 District Level Elections (DLEs) and Referendum at Wawaso in the Kadjebi District in the Oti Region. The NCCE has begun sensitization on the exercise which is scheduled to take place on November 17, 2019.
Mr. Akuamoah said the level of voter apathy and disinterest in district-level polls over the years remains a threat and setback to the development of democratic governance in the country. He advised the electorate to turn up and vote massively in the upcoming referendum to realize the objective of the exercise as well as increase voter turnout.
The Kadjebi District Director of the NCCE, Daniel Agbesi Latsu noted that ensuring a vibrant local government system calls for continuous efforts by stakeholders to deepen the district assembly concept, by making the sub-structures of the assembly attractive to ensure that more candidates stand for elections at all local level.
Mr. Latsu said the relationship between the District Assembly, the Councils and Unit Committees should not be a master-servant one, but rather they should assist and mutually benefit from each other, adding that the councils and unit committees formed important structures through which various communities have opportunities to relate to the assemblies. He said the work of the district assemblies would be more appreciable if the assembly members and unit committees work closely.
The Regent of Wawaso, Mr. Cephas Adukpo, thanked the NCCE team for the educative programme.
