The Oforikrom Municipal Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Ms. Vera Ofei, has cautioned parents and guardians to monitor the activities of their wards on the Internet. She made this statement in an engagement with the Spouses of the Ministers Association of the Assemblies of God Church.
Speaking on the topic, ‘Safety Online’, Ms Vera Ofei emphasized some of the adverse effects of the use of the internet on the youth such as exposure to cyberbullying and the risk of sharing sensitive personal information; without ruling out the benefits of the internet which includes educational purposes, communication and entertainment.
She also admonished members of the Association to advise their children not to agree to personal rendezvous with individuals they meet online, adding that in instances where it turns out necessary to do so, they ought to check with an adult prior to such meetings.
The Secretary of the Association, Mrs. Dorah Acheampong, commended the Commission for the insightful information, “We appreciate the knowledge shared with us and we will endeavor to make our children live a healthier life on the internet while keeping them away from harm’s way”, she stated.
