MAKE PEACE YOUR PRIORITY’-NCCE CHARGES YOUTH

Ms. Josephine Nkrumah, the Chairman of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has advised the youth to be discerning patriotic citizens during these electioneering seasons by paying attention to the messages to make informed choices.

She challenged the youth to play a positive role in the 2020 elections, in order “to set the stage that enhances generational representation that gives you the power to realise your goals and live your dreams of a Ghana you are proud of”.

The NCCE Chairman speaking on: Innovation in Youth Participation in Governance and Elections, at the, just ended International Youth Day celebrations in Accra, Ms. Nkrumah reminded the youth that their participation in the political space should go beyond voting.

With a bulging youth population of 57%, the NCCE Chairman said the youth, a generation central to social and political transformation are crucial in determining election outcomes.

She, therefore, stressed the need for effective engagement of the youth in order to ensure desirable outcomes of the country’s political trajectories.

She expressed concern that the gains Ghana made in our democratic journey, could quickly be eroded if the youth do not understand themselves as a generation who matter in the principles and objectives of our democracy.

While encouraging the youth to take interest in the country’s governance and contest in the elections, Ms. Nkrumah entreated them to be peace agents who reject violent candidates and shame political activists who preach violence.

“There can only be one Ghana and your future is tied to the peace and stability of our Ghana” the NCCE Chairman stressed, urging the youth to harness current opportunities in the areas of information communication technology to make the changes, implement systems, and transform institutions for the true realisation of democracy.

The National Youth Authority which promotes youth participation in national development, as part of marking the International Youth Day, charges the young people to respond to the urgency of the COVID-19 pandemic and chart a path for the future of the country.
