Bosome-Freho District Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has advised the Ghanaian youth to uphold civic values and good citizenship.
The constitution mandated them to do this at all times, he said, stressing that building a prosperous nation and good governance were dependent on a disciplined citizenry.
Mr. Badu, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), at Asiwa, to round off the celebration of the 2023 Citizenship Week, organized by the NCCE for basic schools in the Bosome-Freho District, cited the critical role the youth played in the nation’s development.
“They are the future leaders and agents of change in peacebuilding, strong and united democratic Ghana, hence, the Commission’s strategy and slogan of ‘catch them young’,” the Director noted.
The Week was marked on the theme: “30 Years of Consolidating Constitutional Democracy and Building National Cohesion: The Role of the Ghanaian Child”.
This year’s event saw about 30 basic schools in the District participating and saw some accomplished personalities sensitizing the youth on their core responsibilities and duties as citizens of Ghana.
These included inculcating in the children the values of accountability, peaceful co-existence, and positive attitudinal change in the citizenry.
The participating schools were also taught the essence of a clean environment, good hygiene practices, and loyalty to the country to prevent the growth of violent extremist activities.
They were exposed to the idea of promoting the culture of political tolerance, upholding and defending Ghana’s Constitution and the law in order to foster national unity as well as respect for the rights of others.
Mr. Badu said other aims of the Week included instilling the spirit of volunteerism in the participants while ensuring that some of the resource persons adopted civic education clubs as external patrons.
He was optimistic the event would help reinforce adherence to values such as patriotism, peaceful coexistence, and respect as building blocks for national cohesion.
