The Chairman of the National Commission for Civic Education Ms. Kathleen Addy has paid a two-day working visit to the Northern Region
to monitor work on a baseline survey on Preventing and Containing Violent Extremism, PCVE. The survey is being undertaken by the NCCE with support from the European Union.
Ms. Addy’s during her visit also met with traditional leaders and opinion leaders to inform them of their roles in the Preventing and Containing Violent Extremism Project. She also met with NCCE staff in the region to beef up support for the project and how prepared staff were to ensure successful project implementation. The PCVE Project will see the NCCE engage the public on violent extremism in the wake of the upsurge of activities of extremist groups in neighbouring Burkina Faso and for that matter within the West African Sub-Region (Sahel).
Ms. Addy visited the Nanumba North Municipal office, Yendi Municipal, Tamale Metro, Lamashie Naa palace (Lamashegu, Sagnarigu Municipal (Jisonaayili, the Regional Office, Bishara Radio and Savelugu Municipal.
She later called on the Bimbilla Regent at Bimbilla and Lamashie Naa in the Tamale Metropolis. She mentioned that her visit has become necessary to officially inform the traditional leaders of the Commission’s pending public education on PCVE. She said the NCCE will heavily rely on the findings of the baseline survey for public education on violent extremism and called for the support of traditional leaders in the project-targeted regions.
Ms. Addy said Traditional Authorities have leading roles to play as key partners in preventing violence and maintaining peace in their jurisdictions. The Commission is ready to work with everybody and particularly the Traditional leaders, she added.
The two traditional leaders; Bimbilla Regent and Lamashie Naa, thanked Ms. Addy and lauded the efforts of the Commission in ensuring that citizens are well informed about the threats of violent extremism and how citizens can support state actors to prevent it. They both expressed their readiness to work with the NCCE to promote a stable and peaceful environment and safeguard the security of all.
Ms. Addy later interacted with staff in the region and urged them to brace themselves for the tasks ahead. She called on staff to commit to achieving the desired impact for PCVE Project. According to her, the Commission would not countenance laziness at any time and more importantly during the 18 months project period.
She said it was time to prove again that the Commission had the experienced staff capable of delivering.
