Ga West NCCE Engages Amasaman Hairdressers and Beauticians in Campaign Against Domestic Violence

Hairdressers and beauticians in Amasaman have been encouraged to play a more active role in challenging domestic violence and promoting respect within families and communities.

The call came during a civic education engagement organised by the Ga West Municipal Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) for members of the Hairdressers and Beauticians Association in Amasaman.

The programme focused on helping participants recognise domestic and gender-based violence, understand their consequences and appreciate the importance of reporting abuse through appropriate channels. It also reinforced the need to uphold human rights and gender equality in everyday interactions.

Leading the engagement were the Ga West Municipal Director of NCCE, Mrs. Edith Awudor; Mr. Prosper Missinou; and Ms. Patience Ayera, a National Service Personnel.

The resource persons emphasised that violence, whether occurring within the home or in other settings, undermines personal dignity and the safety of those affected. They encouraged participants to reject attitudes and practices that normalise abuse and to contribute to environments where people are treated with fairness and respect.

Attention was also drawn to the forms and causes of violence, as well as its effects on individuals and households. The discussion placed particular importance on recognising that abuse should not be dismissed as a private matter when people's safety and rights are at stake.

Participants were encouraged to speak out against violence and use appropriate reporting mechanisms when cases come to their attention. Promoting gender equality and respect for the rights of others was presented as an essential part of preventing abuse and fostering peaceful relationships.

The choice of an occupational association for the outreach reflected the value of taking civic education beyond formal institutions and into groups whose members interact regularly with the public. Hairdressers and beauticians can help extend messages of non-violence and respect through their everyday community connections.

The engagement formed part of the NCCE's constitutional mandate to promote awareness of citizens' rights and responsibilities. It reinforced the message that building safer homes and communities requires both public education and a willingness to challenge violence wherever it occurs.
