In the bid to whip up the interest of the citizenry and increase voter turnout for the upcoming District Level Elections (DLEs) and Referendum, the National Commission for Civic Education has intensified its nationwide awareness-raising campaign through TV and radio discussions and listener engagements. This is part of the national sensitization campaign organized by the NCCE with support from the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD).
On Zylophone FM’s Ghana Agenda programme, Nana Kwame Ampedu hosted Mr. Aziz Adjei Laryea a Principal Civic Education Officer and Mr. Nicholas Attiogbe the Ledzokuku Municipal Director of the NCCE as resource persons to explore issues concerning the DLEs and Referendum. During the engagement, Mr. Attiogbe asserted that the DLEs/Referendum process is a civic responsibility for all qualified Ghanaian voters. Therefore all must turn up in their numbers to participate in the referendum and DLE to help elect their Assembly and Unit Committee members who will serve as development agents in their various communities and also vote on the referendum issues.
In his submission, Mr. Laryea explained that, to amend articles 55(3) of the 1992 Constitution which states that, “subject to the provisions of this article, a political party is free to participate in shaping the political will of the people, to disseminate information on political ideas, social and economic programmes of a national character, and sponsor candidates for elections to any public office other than to District Assemblies or lower local government units”, it is required that 40% of registered voters must turn up to vote and out of that, 75% must vote “YES” in favor of the bill in order to get Article 55(3) amended. The awareness continues on other TV and Radio station throughout the country.
