The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) wishes to join all teachers worldwide to observe the annual World Teachers’ Day on 5th October on the theme “Young Teachers: The Future of the Profession”. The World Teachers’ day has been celebrated since 1994 and marks the anniversary of the 1996 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation regarding the Status of Teachers. This Recommendation sets benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers.
As a constitutional body, the NCCE’s mandate is to educate Ghanaians to make it their civic responsibility to work conscientiously in their lawfully chosen occupation as stated in Article 41(e) of the 1992 Constitution. This we believe will urge young teachers to influence the course of the future to help deepen democracy. In the same vein, The Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 that focuses on attaining quality education specifically distinguished teachers as key players towards achieving the Education 2030 agenda. This calls for recognition of the contributions of young teachers and all teachers for that matter as primary educators in complimenting the role of the parent in shaping the moral fiber of the citizenry based on our values as people. Hence the “world Teachers’ Day celebration.
According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), “The day provides the occasion to celebrate the teaching profession worldwide, to take stock of achievements, and to address some of the issues central for attracting and keeping the brightest minds and young talents in the profession.”
In recognition of the value of the teaching mission, NCCE calls upon governments to prioritize young teachers in policymaking. The commission also invites all stakeholders to share their wisdom and experiences to empower young teachers in the quest to promote the emergence of a vibrant teaching force. Ultimately, we celebrate the work of dedicated teachers around the world whose dedications ensure that “inclusive and equitable quality education” and the promotion of “lifelong learning opportunities for all” become a reality in every corner of the globe.”
The Commission on this International Teachers’ Day would like to celebrate and thank teachers; both active and retired, for their hard work in providing inclusive, quality education and learning opportunities for all.
