A delegation from the Human Rights Commission, Gambia paid a working visit to the NCCE, Ghana Head office in Accra. The visit was to understudy the operations NCCE and its relationship with Ghana’s Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHJRAJ) to contribute to enhancing Ghana’s democracy. The Chairman of the Human Rights Commission, Gambia, Mr. Emmanuel Diouf, said the decision to visit NCCE to learn best practices especially the relationship between NCCE and CHRAJ in executing their respective mandates.
The Director of Communications and Corporate Affairs of the NCCE, Mrs. Joyce Afutu, expressed her gratitude to the delegation for calling on NCCE. She took the team through the mandate and operations of NCCE, describing the Commission as one the Independent Governance Institutions provided by the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana and created by an act of Parliament. “We are present in all the regions, district, municipal, and metropolis across the country”, she added. She outlined the Commission’s activities saying they are designed based on thematic areas (Education on the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, Democracy Education, Education on Human Rights Promotion of Peace Building and Conflict Resolution, Promoting Children’s Rights, Promoting Political and Religious Tolerance, Promotion of Inclusiveness and Participation of Marginalized Groups (e.g. women, people with disabilities, etc.), Education on Sustainable Management of the Environment, Voter Education, Research and Studies on Democratic Development and annual flagship programmes, ( Citizenship Week, Constitution Week, Social Auditing, Constitution Quiz, Project Citizen, National Dialogue Series, among others).
The Chairman of the NCCE, Ms. Josephine Nkrumah stated that the essence of the Independent Governance Institutions in Ghana was to ensure effective governance that allows citizens to feel the real benefit of democracy. This, she said was to ensure that all Independent Governance Institutions (National Commission for Civic Education, Electoral Commission, Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice, and National Media Commission) work closely and complement one another. She said, though the Commission is an Independent Governance Institution, the NCCE collaborates with other government institutions, strategic partners, corporate institutions, Civil Society Organisation, media, among others to execute its constitutional mandate. The Deputy Chairman in charge of Operations, Mr. Samuel Akuamoah indicated that the NCCE/CHRAJ relationship is to ensure that Ghanaians become responsible citizens to help build a strong, vibrant, and democratic Ghana.
