The National Commission for Civic Education, NCCE, has released its 2018 activities. The Commission’s working theme for the year is ‘Our Nation, Our Heritage: Consolidating Ghana’s Democratic Gains’. At a media briefing organized at theCommission’s Head Office in Accra, the Chairman of the NCCE, Ms. Josephine Nkrumah, said the overall objective for the year is to make Ghanaians work hard to consolidate Ghana’s young democracy. She said the theme for 2018 is in line with Ghana’s 25 years of uninterrupted constitutional rule and the NCCE would intensify public engagements on Ghana’s democratic history, the journey so far as well as focusing on civic education that would sustain our democratic gains.
Ms. Josephine Nkrumah said 25 years of constitutional democracy is worth celebrating admitting that the NCCE and other relevant institutions have over the years played significant roles in shaping Ghana’s democracy. ‘As we celebrate 25 years of interrupted Constitutional and Democratic rule, 25 years of continuous democratic governance which has seen the exchange of power between different political parties at least four times, it is a significant achievement in Ghana’s democratic journey. We cannot afford to backpedal because the costs would be too high for us. Therefore we must seek to consolidate the gains we have made as a democratic nation. This achievement has largely been realized by the roles that key constitutional bodies like the NCCE have played in protecting and safeguarding the principles of democracy. Ms. Nkrumah reflecting on 2017 activities described it as successful and thanked the Government of Ghana, the European Union and all other partners for their continued support to the NCCE.
The Deputy Chairman in charge of Operations, Mr. Samuel Asare Akuamoah in a presentation recounted the successes chalked up by the Commission in 2017. He later gave a breakdown of the 2018 activities and the way forward. A number of well-thought-out activities have been planned for 2018. Some of the activities are education on Democratic Consolidation, Regional Re-Organization, Ghana Card Project, Tax Compliance, Right to Information Bill, Good Citizenship, Illegal Mining, Empower the public to resist corruption, Awareness on Whistle Blower Act, staff durbars on ARAP, capacity building for staff and the roll-out of NCCE flagship programmes among others.
Journalists at the briefing asked questions on the work of the NCCE and other related matters. The NCCE Chairman and her deputies took turns to respond to all questions.
In a closing remark, Ms. Kathy Addy, Deputy Chairman Finance and Administration, called on both state and private institutions to collaborate with the NCCE to effectively educate citizens on civic and national related matters. The event was attended by the management and staff of the Commission in Accra.
